Felt Week: Focus on Betz White

By-Jenny2

Felt Week

Felt Week is moving right along, are you inspired yet? We've shared some incredible fiber artists with you already. Today I would like to focus on another amazingly talented person who works with felt: Betz White.

Betz White is an author, designer and green crafter. She has published two fabulous books (more on those in a minute), constantly comes up with adorable projects on her blog, sells lovely felt items and patterns (among other things) in her Etsy shop, and has designed her own modern and organic fabric line. She recently announced that her first organic fabric line for Robert Kaufman will be released this July as part of their GreenStyle collection. Betz is currently very busy at Quilt Market!

Betz is a huge proponent of upcycling and repurposing in crafting. "Stitch Beautifully, Tread Lightly" is her motto. Her projects are easy on the eyes and the environment. It is from reading her blog and checking out her first book Warm Fuzzies that I discovered the amazing uses for felted thrifted sweaters!

Warm Fuzzies: 30 Sweet Felted Projects is full of adorable projects that use different felted sweaters, blankets and other items. Many of the patterns include uses for sweater cuffs, button plackets, scraps, etc.

I own Betz's second book Sewing Green: 25 Projects Made with Repurposed and Organic Materials, and it is a must-have for the eco-conscious crafter. It features all sorts of projects to repurpose fabrics and materials from around your household. Several of them use felt in clever ways, including slippers, coasters and trivet, and pillows.

On her blog, Betz continuously posts inspiring projects as well as smart ideas for repurposing felted wool items. Check out these tips for refashioning sweaters and these easy pillows. I love her Holiday Hints round-ups, loaded with lovely projects to make for decorating or giving.

Betz's blog also offers an impressive list of free tutorials. Here are a few of my favorites, including some beautiful holiday ornaments!

In her Etsy shop, you can find beautiful handmade items and PDF patterns, as well as cuts of her organic fabrics. Below are the Springtime Sewing Set and Squeak and Spike patterns -- aren't they adorable?

Betz often teaches workshops, both online and in person, for making wonderful projects with felt. So make sure and check her blog for announcements. You can also find her on Twitter here.
